Puerto Abrigo is located in a sheltered port inland from the beach. It has a well-marked entrance for easy entry and exit for a day or more of sailing. There is a reef system just north of the port for fun exploring called Arrecife Alacranes which is part of the national park system. Puerto Abrigo is off the beaten hurricane path but is also secure place to berth a boat in case of a storm. It is a fully equipped port that can tackle the smallest to the biggest repairs including hauling out your boat. There are many skilled laborers available at a fraction of the cost of labor in Canada, Europe, or the USA. Club Paraiso is affiliated with West Marine and can deliver anything in their catalog in a timely fashion. The lagoon that shares the port’s water is an excellent place for kayaking.

Progreso, the neighboring town is a lively port and has a fishing village atmosphere that is also a tourist town for snow birds in the winter and a vacation spot for the people of Merida in the summer. It has many restaurants, shopping, a movie theater, as well as hardware stores. It also has a good hospital. Progreso is just a short drive to the capital city of the Yucatan, Merida. Many types of transportation are available between the two cities.

Merida is a beautiful big city that has everything. It is a historical city filled with art and culture. You can find any taste of food in the city’s full range of restaurants. There is music everywhere and the only thing warmer than the climate are the hearts of the people.
